Why consider breast revision surgery?

Despite your best efforts to achieve your vision when you choose to undergo breast augmentation, in some cases it has resulted in less than satisfactory results. Some women choose to undergo a revision surgery after pregnancy, a dramatic weight loss, sagging, or the desire to go larger or smaller. Breast revision surgery may be needed if the implants have been in place for a long period and need replacement. Our Beverly Hills breast revision surgery is the process of correcting complications and abnormalities after a primary breast augmentation surgery.

What are the most common reasons for breast revision surgery?

Women have the wonderful ability to choose to change the shape, size, appearance, or position of their breasts with a custom aesthetic surgery. If you are unhappy with the results of a breast augmentation, then Dr. Michelle Lee can help you achieve your vision of beauty. The following are some of the most common reasons that women come to PERK Plastic Surgery for breast revision surgery:

  • Implant exchange
  • Implant removal
  • Ruptured or deflated implant
  • Capsular contracture
  • Malposition

Implant exchange

Sometimes a woman may desire to either increase or decrease the size of her implants, based on personal aesthetic vision. In this case, Dr. Lee will perform an implant exchange, removing older implants and placing new ones.

Implant removal

In this case, the patient may no longer desire to have implants at all and choose to have them completely removed. Dr. Lee can restore your breasts to their original proportions, creating a round, plump, natural look. You may choose to remove your implants due to changes in your aesthetic taste or find that larger breasts hinder your current lifestyle.

Ruptured or deflated implant

Although it is rare, implants can fail, rupture or deflate. A rupture is very noticeable with saline implants, as the saline (which is harmless to the body) leaks out. Silicone implants have a high-density gel that will maintain the breast shape despite a rupture, although it is necessary to replace the implant once the rupture is identified.

Ruptured silicone implants are less obvious. It is recommended that you have your implants checked regularly. Revision surgery can remove a ruptured implant and replace it, taking care to preserve breast symmetry. Breast implants have a guarantee, and when they fail within the period of coverage, the manufacturer covers the cost of a replacement implant and towards the cost of revision surgery.

Capsular contracture

Capsular contracture is one of the most common complications from breast augmentation. This condition develops when an excess of scar tissue forms around the implant, giving an unattractive, unnatural look breasts, often accompanied by pain and discomfort. Capsular contracture is resolved by removing the scar tissue that has developed (capsulectomy) and placing new implants or removing them, reshaping the natural tissue, and restoring natural breast size.

Malposition

If the pocket size is not perfectly fitted to the implant, the implants may shift and migrate – inwards, outwards, downwards or upwards. This is more common in implants that have been placed above the pectoral muscle and below the breast tissue. These aesthetic problems can all be corrected with breast revision surgery performed by our accomplished, board-certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Michelle Lee, who is widely regarded as being among the finest breast revision surgeons practicing in Beverly Hills.

Who makes a good candidate for revision surgery?

Candidates for revision surgery are those who are fully healed from the original surgery and who feel that their breasts are less than satisfactory. Candidates for breast revision surgery include:

  • Your breasts are asymmetrical
  • One breast is lower than the other
  • The breast implants have “merged” in the center of your chest
  • One or both of your implants have shifted to the sides of your chest
  • You have developed capsular contracture
  • Your breasts are larger than you wanted
  • Your breasts are smaller than you wanted
  • Your breasts are too low on the chest wall
  • You have older implants you want replaced
  • You are in good mental and physical health

What should I discuss during my consultation?

Your consultation will involve an evaluation of the problems you are experiencing with your primary surgery, and what you want to achieve once your revision is complete. Some of the questions you can ask Dr. Lee include:

  • Which procedure best suits my goals for size, shape, and position of my breasts?
  • Which approach is the best for my health and wellbeing?
  • What is the difference in recovery time between different procedures?
  • Which procedure is best for my breasts when considering your age and the elasticity of my skin?
  • What size of implants works the best for my lifestyle?

Will recovery take longer than the original procedure after breast revision surgery?

The recovery will be similar to what you experienced in your original augmentation, or often slightly shorter. If you are undergoing a breast lift with your revision, the recovery time is slightly longer, and everyone is different. Generally, you will need about six weeks before returning to vigorous exercise or activities.
